When I heard about the car wash before I started that kind of business, I just thought that business is so profitable based onthe cost verse the price. Someone who I know runs a car wash in Calgary. His facility is the type of coin-op(coin operating). He said the break even point is 20% of the sales while he owns the business without a loan. That means 80% is the profit. I couldn't believe that at that time. If there is a sales $1000 in a day, the net profit is $800 after costs. It was amazing for me. The moment I heard that story, I made a decision to run a car wash some day. And The day had come to me. I was looking for a business especially a car wash after sold my convenience store in Rocky. A couple in Lacombe who goes to church that my wife goes to suggested me to make a joint company to buy and run a car wash in Lacombe. I didn't hesitated to take the deal. Finally I got in the car wash business.
Basically there are three types on the car wash. If there is a car wash, the car wash could be one of the following or the mixed one.
1. Coin-operation/Automatic
This one has some coin boxes to choose a menu after insert coins. The automatic one is that a driver do not anything to wash his or her vehicle. It is done by the machine itself after he or she chosen a menu.
2. Time-Charge
There is an entrance to drive the vehicle in and an exit to drive it out. Once the vehicle comes in, the time is ticking on the price. Usually they charge by a minute. After they are done on washing the vehicle, they must pay for the time they stayed inside.
3. Detail
This style is for some rich people who don't want to wash their vehicle by themselves. Someone else wash their vehicle for higher price than normal. There is some courses to be chosen by customers.
There are things that I felt last 4 months since I took over a car wash(Time charge style).
The pros:
- I can make much time on my family if I want to.
- Physical hard working makes me healthier.
- I can teach myself the skills on the human resource management. I need many people who can work for this.
- The supplier is few compared to the grocery store or the gas station. No headache on the suppliers.
- The economic law : Increasing returns.(Increase at the ratio of geometrical progression)
The cons:
- This business needs much cares on the machines and the equipments. If something goes wrong or works not well, That affects directly to the sale.
- Making the environment keep clean is not that easy. Some person leave without any traces even we don't know who wasthere but some people make the place messy like an waste land.
- If the car wash has bays for the trucks(big trailors or dump trucks), you should be embraced to work hard. Some truck drivers think this is the place to dump dirts and sands. After this kind of trucks gone, we can see the piles of dirts or sands on the floor. we should get rid of this right away to make another coming-in driver feel cleanliness. The worse one is that the grease of oilfield truckswhich cannot remove easily. Once the grease splashed on the high spot of the wall or the bay curtain, it is so difficult to clean those ones. also the degreaser that is used to remove it is so volatile chemicals. We must be very careful on the handling for the eyes and the skin. When a trailer for animal transportation comes in, The floor is full of hays or kind of wood chips and grasses and smelly too. ^^. but it is OK to be compared to the oilfield trucks.
- If you can fix the broken equipments, then you can save a lot of money as a net income. But if you can't, you loose a lot of money which should be your income.
